This is a new newspaper and journalism program this year housed at Schellenberg and it is covering all district high schools news. The three high school’s newspapers, The Shield, The Kingspage and The Milwaukian, are now combining into one North Clackamas School District newspaper online.

Budget cuts hit hard

NCSD12 is faced with its fourth year of reduced state revenue and for the 2011-2012 school year, multiple changes have been made throughout the district to decrease financial pressures.

class size up

Although student populations are down, class size increase in North Clackamas School District’s NCSD high schools is taking its toll on the 2011-2012 school year.

A gift to broadcasting

Many class funds have been drastically cut in the last several years and  teachers are looking for extra money through district funding, donations or grants. SSC Broadcasting classes can continue projects thanks to a grant from the City of Milwaukie of $11,000.

District time change 10 minutes earlier

This year, high school classes now start at 8:35 A.M., instead of 8:45, which had been the bell for more than 10 years. The change began as a proposal last spring, and was approved by the North Clackamas School District (NCSD) during the summer.

‘Time Warp’ hits Putnam

This years RPHS homecoming theme at was ”Time Warp.” Each class was assigned a decade from the 20th Century and performed a lip sync at the Homecoming assembly.

Lip-syncs become district-wide homecoming tradition

The classic school tradition of Homecoming for the NCSD12 high schools is to perform a lip-sync for each class, based on the classes’ individual theme.

Editorials

Activities fee is necessary, fair

Being artistic comes with a price, but a necessary one. A newly implemented activity $25 fee is now part of NCSD12 for every separate activity a student is involved in. It applies to speech, drama, choir, band and orchestra. With imposing budget cuts, the district is no longer able to pick up the stipend paid to teachers and advisors who work overtime.

Large class sizes need reduction

Of all of the problems facing the educational system, one is particularly vexing to students and teachers: dramatically rising class sizes. Although this has been a subtle, constant climb year after year, has added up considerably.

CHS's new announcement monitors

Despite such a large student body, CHS has to be able to convey messages in a way everyone will hear them. In past years this was done with the announcement system, but this year administrators decided to change things up with the idea of increased communication. Now instead of 8-inch room speakers there are 47-inch flat screen TV’s around the school, constantly flashing daily updates.

Lib dubs reach Putnam Homecoming

Many people would agree, students hardly ever participate in high school activities or events. Some of the students simply claim it is a “waste of time,” although RPHS have recently started a tradition designed to influence the whole school to become more involved: lip dub.

This is a new newspaper and journalism program this year housed at Schellenberg and it is covering all district high schools news. The three high school’s newspapers, The Shield, The Kingspage and The Milwaukian, are now combining into one North Clackamas School District newspaper online. The newspaper staff would like to take the opinions of all staff and students into consideration.
